Year 7 Catch up Action Plan 2017-18

In 2016 – 2017 The Avon Valley School was allocated £25,000 in funding as part of the Year 7 catch up initiative. Year 7 catch-up funding provides an additional £500 for the weakest students in Yr 7 and the funding is based on historic levels of underachievement at KS2. This funding aims to help these students to ‘catch up’ with their peers during their first year at the school.

Maths – 20 Students

The students are baseline tested on entry as, each year, a small proportion of students arrive with no academic data. This information is used, along with the KS2 scores, to place students into sets. A proportion of the catch-up funding is used to create 2 extra Maths sets, allowing students who arrive significantly below expectation to be taught in smaller groups of typically 10 -15 students. These groups are staffed by a fully qualified maths teacher with additional TA support. The teacher allocation for these groups is considered carefully and the teacher in charge of these groups is exceptional at helping students to secure their number bonds, basic number skills and times tables.

On top of the allocated classroom time, students are supported by withdrawal from non-core lessons for small group work, either led by a maths teacher or a member of the inclusion team. Students receive a minimum of one extra session a fortnight but in many cases more.

The progress of all students is analysed each term alongside the rest of the cohort and further intervention is put in place for any student who is failing to make progress towards age related expectations.

English – 20 students

On arrival, the English department assess each student, carrying out a written, spelling and reading activity. The data from this is mapped against their KS2 data and used to place students into sets. A proportion of the catch-up funding is used to create an extra English set, allowing students who arrive significantly below expectation to be taught in smaller groups of typically 10 -15 students. Within Year 7, 35 students had a reading age of 9 or below on arrival and there are also a significant number of EAL students who are learning English.

When students arrive at Avon Valley they are screened for dyslexia and a report generated which identifies if students have any signs of dyslexia and, if so, at what level this is. If they have mild, moderate or severe dyslexia they are offered an overlay to help with their writing and reading work, they are placed on our Inclusion register and further monitoring/assessments are carried out. Staff are then informed of appropriate ways to support the child.

Students are also withdrawn from other subject areas to take part in Study Plus sessions to boost both literacy and numeracy skills. These groups are small in number to enable more targeted support to be given.

Specialist Teaching Assistants take groups to carry out reading assessments using Lexia, a literacy software package. Students also carry out activities around ‘reading for meaning’ and comprehension questions to check understanding. Many students are able to decode information but struggle to gain understanding. High frequency spellings are also introduced to put these into sentences to build structure. TA’s also do daily reading or memory work with the lower ability students. A Phonics lesson is delivered to our weakest students as well as intervention through 1:1 supported learning. Our EAL students, who require a high level of intervention, also receive a weekly Phonics lesson to help their basic understanding and have a dedicated member of staff working with them.

Ambition - 10 students Maths and English

A small group of ten year 7 students who are deemed to not be ‘secondary ready’ are taught on a primary model in a separate teaching group entitled Ambition. These students work with a teacher and TA on academic subjects within the small group
