Sophie raises funds for Cancer Research in memory of grandad

A Year 11 student from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College has smashed her fundraising target after donating her hair to charity. Sophie McCutcheon initially set a target of £200, but has received donations in excess of £750, with donations still being collected.

Sophie, who had hair measuring 34 inches which was last cut in 2013, decided to donate at least 14 inches of her lengthy hair to charity. In addition to donating her hair Sophie also used the experience to raise funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of a grandad she never had opportunity to meet.

Sophie, said, “Sadly I never met my Grandad Jim who died of this horrible disease in 1988, aged only 50. So I decided to do something good in his memory. I was excited to get my hair cut, but I also felt emotionally. I like my new hair but need to get used to having shorter hair.”

Alison Davies, Headteacher, said, “As the school’s headteacher I am always amazed by the generosity and kindness shown by our students. I am very impressed with the amount that Sophie has received for donating her hair and I am sure that money will be put to good use by Cancer Research UK.”
